This site is for those seeking information on classic Powell rods. These are the rods built by the Powell familly in northern California - a rod building history spanning three generations and nearly 80 years. I provide information on the rods of E.C. Powell, Walton Powell, Press Powell and the early Powell Rod Company. Ialso have info on some of the makers closely associated with the Powells. Names like Tony Maslan and Max Yerxa have a place here as well.
Why I built this site; I grew up in Chico and as a kid I knew Walt and Press through my dad. I even fished with Walt a time or two - of course I was too young to realize how cool that was at the time. I grew up fishing the streams, rivers, and lakes of northern California in the late 70's and 80's. I have always loved to fly fish and I have wonderful memories of learning the sport from my dad and his friends. Powell rods were an important part of that time in my life. My collecting and study of their history has been quite an enjoyable part of my life for many years.
I have an extensive collection of Powell rods from all eras and all materials. Please feel free to get in touch with questions you have on any rods. If you are looking for a particular Powell rod to fish or for a collection please let me know. I may have what you are looking for or I may know someone who does. I am always interested in buying, selling, and trading rods. I do not include any value information on the site. That is not what the site is about. If you contact me I will be happy, based on my experience, to provide info on the history and value of a rod. Again, please feel free to email me at firstname.lastname@example.org
I am in no way affiliated with the current Powell Rod Company. They continue to make and sell a full line of baitcasting, spincasting, and fly fishing rods. If you are looking for new Powell hardware please go to www.powellco.com.
